Text Messaging & SMS Registration

US carriers require every business to register before texting customers. Here's why, how, and how long it takes.

Business texting in the US runs through a carrier system called A2P 10DLC. Every business must register its brand (who you are) and a campaign (what you send) before text messages will deliver reliably. Unregistered texting gets blocked or filtered — this step is not optional, and it's the one piece of setup with a real waiting period, so start it first.

Steps

  1. Get your business phone number inside SIMBLAI (or port your existing number in).
  2. Start brand registration: legal business name, EIN, and address — entered exactly as they appear on your IRS records.
  3. Pay the small one-time carrier registration fee when prompted; brand approval typically takes a few business days.
  4. Register your campaign: what kind of messages you send, sample messages, and proof of how customers opt in (your form's consent checkbox and privacy policy).
  5. Wait for campaign approval, then send a test text to your own phone.
  6. Keep the consent checkbox on every form that collects phone numbers, and always honor STOP replies — the system handles opt-outs automatically.

Good to know

  • The #1 rejection reason: business name/EIN/address not matching IRS records exactly. Copy from your tax documents, not from memory.
  • Plan for days-to-a-couple-of-weeks end to end. Do this on day one so texting is live when you need it.
  • No clear opt-in evidence = campaign rejection. A consent checkbox on your forms plus an SMS clause in your privacy policy covers it.
